A STERLING REPUTATION

The Sterling Faucet Co. was founded in 1907. The company built a name for itself manufacturing quality faucets and brassware. Sterling came into the Kohler fold in 1984, providing a full line of mid-priced plumbing products that are as tough as they are beautiful.

Since then, Sterling has been a brand of Kohler, a company with a world-class reputation of its own as the recognized leader in kitchen and bath design. Kohler's diversity of products and powerful portfolio of businesses offer industry-leading design, craftsmanship, and innovation, all knit together by a single level of quality over a broad range of price points..

STERLING HIGHLIGHTS

The history of Sterling began over 100 years ago in a garage. From those humble beginnings, Sterling has grown into an industry leader through  dedication to quality and by continuously innovating. Below are a few highlights from Sterling history.

1907

Founded in 1907 as Sterling Specialty Company in Crafton, Pennsylvania, the company manufactured boiler stands and gas valves for fireplaces. J.W. Ruby (eventual president) started as a buffer.

1924

Sterling pioneered the use of a chrome electroplating process. Popular with consumers, the process delivered more than a shiny appearance; components became more durable with greater corrosion resistance.

1940

During the United States’ involvement in World War II, Sterling shifted its brass operations into military production to deliver primers and fuses for artillery shells.

1954

Sterling expanded its facilities and scope of production, growing to more than 1,000 employees. J.W. Ruby, Sterling’s president at the time, was quoted, “Sterling makes everything that brings water into a house and takes it out again.”

1984

Kohler Co. acquired Sterling. As the first acquisition in Kohler’s history, the strategy was to be a major supplier to primarily trade customers—wholesalers, contractors, builders.

1990

Sam Davis, the Vice Chairman of Sterling, became the face, voice, and personality of the brand. The tagline he delivered suited him, “Quality fixtures at reasonable prices.”

1995-2002

Product launches became the backbone of Sterling’s business. From new brass faucet lines and vitreous china products to various tub and shower options, including Vikrell® bathtub and wall products.

2004

Sterling introduced the first made-in-America dual-flush, two-piece toilet with the launch of the water-saving Rockton® toilet.

2019

The Huntsville plant is explanded to increase production.
